Shut up! That’s what I would say to all my daily distractions. We sometimes find that we don’t have enough time to do this and do that. It can get crazy when I’m prepping for events with my team as last minute changes are a norm and we have to be in our zen mode so our clients can feed off our zen-ness so that there are no unnecesary panic attacks. Our ability to focus on what is at hand is so important so shutting out distractions is what we must do.

But today I’m not about to talk about how to get your zen-ness. Today is about how to get more things done by taking a few easy steps.

Have a check list of what you want achieved today. And be realistic about it. A timed check list is better than just any plain check list. So for example, you aim to get 5 appointments with clients for the following week. That would mean you would need at least 50 calls done the week prior. So you can set 10 calls to be done per week day which can be set to 3 calls an hour x 3 hours.

Morning calls are best so you could set 9am-12pm as call time. You might think that 3 calls per hour is too long but if you’re in sales, you would know that you need to know what your customer’s company is currently doing and in need of at that point of your call so a little background research is done prior to the call. Another way is to allocate 10 minutes research x 50 companies= 500 minutes ( approximatedly 8 hours) of research per week prior to you making your calls and you would finish your calls much faster. Allocate specific times when meeting prospects and clients as well.

Also, allocate specific times to check your emails so that you don’t get distracted by all the interesting articles you’ve subscribed to and find that you’ve lost 2 hours. Perhaps 10 minutes per hour would suffice including replying to urgent ones. If you’re working on proposals, this would take the longest time and should be your focus of the day beating all your usual daily routine to get it completed as quickly as possible to be sent to the client.

Checking how popular you are on social media

I’m a sucker for social media. Not because I’m popular but I love reading about interesting news in the business world and watching animal videos and sometimes kay-poh-ing about what my friends are up to. Social media can be addictive. How often do you get notifications that someone has responded to your post and you eagerly open the tab to check. Social Media is a big devil, I tell you. If you do have to peek at what’s happening and not drown in content (unless it’s your job) than allocate perhaps a peek every 3 hours or so and make sure you limit your peeking time to say a maximum of 15 minutes.

If you find time disappearing or you forget that you’re supposed to be doing something by a certain time, set alarms. I forget to drink water so setting an alarm to drink at intervals helps.

Being involved in life

I stopped reading the newspapers about 5 years ago when mostly fiction was being churned out disguised as real news. I get the highlights from Facebook or through my friends. When it’s something really serious, it’s bound to reach you. I find that reading the news about something you can’t do anything about quite pointless.

Dramas. Some people enjoy creating havoc. It keeps them on the edge and adrenaline levels pumped. I stay away from it as much as possible.

Causes. If I could help every person and living thing on this planet and beyond, I would. But I can’t (at this point of time) so I only focus on causes I really care about which is supporting causes involving stray animals/ endangered animals and the environment (I’ve started bringing around my stainless steel straw to gerai’s and having people look me strangely). Do what you can. You need to put all your energy into selected things so you don’t get stretched and get nothing done.

Lots of people are “busy.” But if you want to guide yourself to a future of your choosing, you will need to learn to shut out the noise.
